Sloshing dynamics in cylindrical tank with porous layer under harmonic and seismic excitations

The severe sloshing induced by earthquake in cylindrical liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage tank is of great concern for liquid design. For suppressing sloshing, porous material attached to inner periphery the wall proposed and studied numerically using OpenFOAM. model was validated against with available data without ring baffle, flow through media a U-tube dam break. Fair agreements between them are obtained. Findings show that damping effects layer significant linear scenario compared baffle. also proved be good pressure absorber energy dissipator as evidenced distribution evolution velocity kinetic energy. Under 1-D harmonic excitation, nonlinear swirling waves could effectively changed into planar due inside tank. As demonstration, real scale upright under EL-centro excitation were investigated numerically. • An innovative method proposed. Porous steady-state wave mode mode. intrinsic friction enhanced drag force on passing liquid. Sloshing dynamics simulated.
